Disc Herniations
Interestingly, a herniated disc itself may not cause any symptoms. Problems arise when the disc or swelling around the herniation starts to irritate nearby structures, most commonly the nerve roots.
This can lead to sharp, shooting pain radiating into the upper or lower limbs, sometimes accompanied by other neurological symptoms, such as changes in sensation or muscle weakness.

For most patients with a herniated disc, the painful irritation can be reduced or eliminated in a relatively short period through proper exercise. Associated symptoms, such as tingling, reduced sensitivity, or muscle weakness, typically improve later, as the nerve tissue regenerates.
