Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)
Tinnitus is a common occurrence and usually fades within a few seconds of starting. However, if it persists, it can become bothersome for many people, leading to difficulties with concentration, sleep, and even causing psychological distress.
The problem is that current medicine does not fully understand why tinnitus occurs or how to treat it. However, a certain percentage of these issues are classified as somatic (somatosensory) tinnitus, which may be related to the cervical spine, temporomandibular joint, or shoulder girdle.
Somatic tinnitus is often influenced by physical activity, head and jaw movement, or increased tension in certain muscles. Physiotherapy can help treat somatic tinnitus, but it is often more complex than addressing typical musculoskeletal pain.
There is considerable variability in how individual patients respond to treatment, so it may not always be fully successful. Fortunately, for some patients, tinnitus resolves on its own within a few months.
