Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine that occurs when there is an increase in intra-abdominal pressure, such as during coughing, sneezing, running, or lifting a heavy object. It most commonly affects women over the age of 40, but it can also occur in younger women, often in connection with childbirth.

Physiotherapy, which includes exercises for the pelvic floor muscles, has been shown to achieve good results in patients with stress incontinence, especially in the early stages (Stage 1 SUI), where urine leakage only occurs during coughing or sneezing. It appears that a combination of abdominal muscle exercises along with pelvic floor strengthening is more effective than strengthening the pelvic floor alone. At Spine Physiotherapy, we use specific methods to strengthen these muscles.
